Support Local Economy, May 20
RANT: I do not expect this letter to make national headlines, but I hope it will enlighten local school districts when they plan trips for their students.

Next week, my granddaughter will be taking a trip to Austin with her choral group. Cost: approximately $200 or more, all paid by struggling parents in this economy.

Have these children ever been to our planetarium? The Goodman Museum? Kilgore’s rich history with the Oil Museum? East Texas owes its growth to the oil industry starting with the Daisy Bradford well.

My son is employed by Canon Safety, Kilgore. As a safety technician he is responsible for the lives of the drilling crew, should H2S (hydrogen sulfide, a deadly gas) escape. Before a well can be drilled, there are contingency procedures. Residents living within a certain radius must be informed of the danger.

Let’s keep the cost of trips down and also support local communities. Kids may learn much more in the process.
