Area Employment Rate Up To 93.7 Percent For April

The employment rate for the Tyler area rose to 93.7 percent in April, up from the 93.1 percent seen here the month before.
Last month’s rate also was a jump from the 92.8 percent employment rate reported for April 2011, according to figures released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission.
The employment rate in Texas was at 93.5 percent in April, an increase from 93 percent in March and 92.4 percent the same time a year ago.
“With more than 12.5 million workers and job seekers, Texas’ labor force is at an all-time high,” Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton said in a prepared statement. “I am encouraged that our steadily improving labor market continues to offer good prospects for these hard-working Texans.”
The state’s employment figures have continued to be better than the nation’s.

The country had an employment rate of 92.3 percent last month, up from 91.6 percent the month before and 91.3 the year before.
“The Texas economy continues to add jobs, with 10 of 11 major industries growing over the past year,” Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Andres Alcantar said. “The continued growth across industries is positive and we encourage employees and job seekers to take advantage of the services offered through our 28 local workforce boards across the state.”
Private-sector employers in Texas added 12,200 jobs over the month, totaling 277,100 private-sector job gains over the year for an annual growth rate of 3.2 percent.

Eight of the 11 major industries in the state posted gains in April. The construction industry led with the addition of 7,300 jobs while positions in trade, transportation and utilities expanded by 2,900. The industry has added 42,300 jobs in Texas over the past year for an annual growth rate of 2 percent.
“Texas continues to perform well and enjoyed steady gains in the goods-producing industries,” Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Employers Tom Pauken said. “The manufacturing industry is showing strong growth, with 6,300 jobs added in April and 25,400 over the last 12 months. Texas continues to be a great place to do business.”
The Midland area once again had the highest employment rate, 96.5 percent, in the state for April, while the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission and the Brownsville-Harlingen areas remained tied for the lowest employment rates in Texas, at 89.9 percent each.
