Collegiate Graduation Ceremonies Scheduled
College graduation ceremonies will take place this week for students at two Tyler schools.

Tyler Junior College will have commencement ceremonies on Friday in Wagstaff Gymnasium on the TJC main campus, 1400 E. Fifth St.

The University of Texas at Tyler will have commencement ceremonies on Friday and Saturday at the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, 3900 University Blvd.

TJC will recognize 917 graduation candidates for the spring 2012 semester. UT Tyler will recognize 842 degree candidates.

Graduates in the TJC School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences will be recognized in the 2 p.m. ceremony Friday, according to a prepared statement from the college.

The 6 p.m. ceremony will recognize graduates in the School of Professional and Technical Programs, according to the statement.

TJC President Dr. Mike Metke will certify the graduates and confer associate’s degrees and certificates of proficiency.

TJC English professor Dr. Alan Barnes will give the invocation and benediction. Jon Jacobs, president of the TJC Alumni Association, will present the alumni salutation.

TJC board members will present diplomas and certificates. This includes board president Clint Roxburgh, first vice president John Hills, second vice president Dr. Joe Prud’homme, and members Rohn Boone, Ann Brookshire, Mike Coker, David Hudson, Peggy Smith and Lonny Uzzell.

Dr. Cheryl Rogers, executive director of institutional effectiveness, planning and research, will lead the singing of the national anthem and alma mater.

UT Tyler ceremonies will be at: 3 p.m. Friday, College of Nursing and Health Sciences; 6 p.m. Friday, College of Arts and Sciences, 10 a.m. Saturday, College of Business and Technology, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Colleges of Education and Psychology and Engineering and Computer Science.

Speakers are Dr. Kirk Calhoun, UT Health Science Center at Tyler president, and Todd Staples, Texas Department of Agriculture commissioner.

Calhoun will address graduates of the Colleges of Nursing and Health Sciences and Arts and Sciences.

Staples will address graduates of the Colleges of Business and Technology, Education and Psychology and Engineering and Computer Science.

UT Tyler President Rodney H. Mabry will give remarks. Dr. Donna Dickerson, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, will present and certify doctoral degree candidates.

The deans of each of the university’s colleges will present and certify master’s and baccalaureate degree candidates. These deans are Dr. Martin Slann, Arts and Sciences; Dr. Harold Doty, Business and Technology; Dr. William Geiger, Education and Psychology; Dr. James Nelson, Engineering and Computer Science; and Dr. Linda Klotz, Nursing and Health Sciences.

UT Tyler alumni representatives Steve McNeely and Shane McGuire will give alumni association presentations.
