Tyler Day Nursery Begins Work On Expansion

Tyler Day Nursery broke ground on a building expansion Wednesday, a continuation of recent new endeavors by the nonprofit organization.

“This expansion will help us cut down our waiting list,” board president Annette Findley said. “We will always be in need of more growth.”

Tyler Day Nursery was founded in 1936 and is a nonprofit, licensed child-care program for low-income families. Tuition is based on a percentage of household income. The facility currently cares for 102 children between the ages of 8 weeks and 5 years old, and there are about 100 more on the waiting list, Jaquita Lee, executive director, said.

The organization broke ground on the expansion, which will house 28 more children, because of a matching grant announced at the annual Storybook Dinner last week.

Tyler Day Nursery received the $60,000 challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, Inc.

The organization has raised $186,623 so far for the “Rocking to Reading” building campaign, more than halfway to its goal of $302,000, Mary Meyers, chairman of the capital campaign, said.

The organization has other grant possibilities and supporters in hopes of providing more funds, Ms. Meyers said, but is still in need of donors. Call 903-592-4861 for more information.
