Annexation Celebration Slated Today At Center
Tyler city leaders plan today to celebrate the recent voluntary annexation of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and announce the start of a new communication education program.

Remarks are set for 11 a.m. in the main lobby of the health science center, 11937 U.S. Highway 271.

Mayor Barbara Bass and hospital President Dr. Kirk Calhoun are expected to share details about the new educational venture.

The March annexation was initiated by the hospital, officials said.

“As illustrated in the Industry Growth Initiative plan, the higher education and health care industries are critical components of Tyler’s local economy,” Mayor Bass said in a statement. “Health care provides for more than 25,000 jobs in our region and has an economic impact estimated at $3.1 billion. By annexing UTHSCT into Tyler city limits, we are taking an important step in continuing to support and grow these industries.”

The hospital’s campus is 593.11 acres.

As a result of the annexation, Tyler’s boundaries encompass 57.02 square miles of 36,494.90 acres.

“We are pleased to see this process move forward,” Calhoun said, also in a statement. “We look forward to becoming a part of Tyler not only in name, but as a partner in our city’s future growth and development.”

Adjacent properties remain unaffected by the annexation, city officials said.
