Tyler Philanthropist, Businessman Bill Barrett Dies
The loss of a Tyler businessman and philanthropist is being mourned by community members and staff and faculty at The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College.
Bill Barrett, who has been honored for his work in education and as a longtime civic leader, died this week at the age of 67.
Barrett and his wife were honored earlier this year with the 2012 Patriot of the Year Award from The University of Texas at Tyler.
“We are proud to call Bill our own and we cherish his memory with great affection and unparalleled respect,” wrote university president Dr. Rodney Mabry in a statement. “We cannot begin to express our great sense of loss, and extend our genuine condolences to Glenda and their entire family.”

In the statement, Mabry said Barrett and his wife, Glenda, have been “two of UT Tyler’s most generous and loyal supporters.”
On top of being involved in the Patriot Golf Classic, the Barretts established scholarship funds for students at UT Tyler as well, Mabry said in a previous interview.
Barrett had served on the development board for UT Tyler and on the Tyler Junior College Foundation Board, according to his obituary. He also served on the Tyler Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Council.

Barrett owned the Barrett Motor Company in Tyler for more than two decades before selling the business in 2004, his obituary reads.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church following a private burial service.
“In lieu of flowers if desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church, 8720 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler, Texas 75703,” the obituary reads.
