Update: Unloaded Gun Brought To Orr Campus

Tyler ISD officials were investigating an Orr Elementary School incident after a student brought an unloaded gun onto campus Monday.

The student brought the pistol in his backpack but never displayed the weapon or told classmates about it, according to district officials.

TISD spokeswoman Laura Jackson said another student alerted a teacher to the gun. That teacher immediately contacted the principal, and the child and his backpack were removed from the classroom.

No TISD students were harmed during the incident, according to a statement from the district.

Ms. Jackson said she did not know where the child got the gun or why he brought it to school and said the incident remained under investigation. She declined to say what grade the child was in.

Ms. Jackson said the boy who brought the gun to school did not return to class after the incident.

The district’s procedures were followed and the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken regarding the student involved, according to the prepared statement.

Orr parents were notified of the incident through an AlertNow phone message from the district, Ms. Jackson said.

“This is a reminder to all of us to be involved, to look through your child’s belongings and make sure that they don’t have anything that doesn’t need to make it on campus,” Ms. Jackson said.
