Tyler ISD officials were investigating an Orr Elementary School incident after a student brought an unloaded gun onto campus today.
TISD spokeswoman Laura Jackson said another student alerted a teacher to the gun. That teacher immediately contacted the principal and the child and his backpack were removed from the classroom.
Ms. Jackson said she did not know where the child got the gun or why he brought it to school and said the incident was still under investigation.
The district’s procedures were followed and the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken regarding the student involved, according to the prepared statement.
“This is a reminder to all of us to be involved, to look through your child’s belongings and make sure that they don’t have anything that doesn’t need to make it on campus,” Ms. Jackson said.
