Stupid Is..., May 6
RANT: Several months ago I made a suggestion of what I thought was a common-sense approach to the way many of the traffic signals might be set at the high-volume intersections.

I suggested that it made sense if the north- and southbound traffic moved at the same time. Then the left turn traffic took their turn. After that, the east- and westbound traffic would move, followed by the left turn traffic from those directions. That would eliminate having to sit there and watch while the other three directions took their individual turns.

And, I suggested that if the above system was followed, then you would not only know the color of the light you face, you also would know the color facing the other three directions. It wouldn’t even matter if the left turn traffic went first.

If the present settings were chosen to expedite a smooth flow of traffic within the city, it would be understandable. That doesn’t seem to be the case.

Now, I have to admit that when I was in school, we didn’t have what is called New Math. I don’t know what New Math is. I’m still of the opinion that 2 plus 2 equals 4. That may be the cause of my fouled-up reasoning. Or, as Forrest Gump’s mother always said, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
