‘Hunger’ Initiative Marking 20 Years At ET Food Bank
“Stamp Out Hunger,” a partnership between the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the Feeding America Network of food banks, will mark 20 years on May 12 with this year’s initiative.
“‘Stamp Out Hunger’ is one of the easiest ways to help fight hunger in our community without even leaving your home,” said Dennis Cullinane, executive director of the East Texas Food Bank, in a written release.

To participate in the initiative, East Texas residents can leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox, prior to the time of regular mail delivery, according to the release.
The food collected in East Texas will go to the East Texas Food Bank. In 2011, Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food, which marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers.
“Hunger is a major problem across the country,” said Gale Suggs, Tyler letter carrier, in the written release. “Families, children and seniors do not have enough food to eat and this is our opportunity to help the East Texas Food Bank in their fight against hunger.”
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in food-insecure homes reached nearly 49 million in 2011.
