Trace Adkins Headlines Veteran's D.C. Sendoff
Area World War II veterans will receive a patriotic sendoff courtesy of country superstar Trace Adkins.
Adkins will perform the national anthem as 33 World War II vets head for Washington, D.C., on May 31 with the Brookshire's/Super 1 Foods Heroes Flight.
The celebration will begin at 6:15 a.m. May 31 in the parking lot of the Brookshire's store at 100 Rice Road in Tyler. Veterans will depart at 7 a.m., after which Adkins will greet fans and sign autographs as time allows. The general public is invited to attend.

The trip, sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company, will take the veterans to view the WWII Memorial, the United States Capitol building, the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery as well as several other sites around the city. Veterans selected for the trip will be taken free of charge.
“We certainly hope to have a big crowd there to wish these veterans who gave so much an enthusiastic sendoff,” Rick Ellis, vice president of marketing for Brookshire Grocery Company, said in a statement.
“And we're certainly thrilled that Trace Adkins will be there to help us make this a memorable event.”

Veterans participating in the trip include 32 men and one woman, representing cities and towns from across East Texas, including Tyler, Pittsburg, Jefferson, Kilgore, Flint, Jacksonville, Athens, Gladewater and Lindale.
“We are very grateful for the service provided by these veterans and are proud to honor them,” Ellis said.
“The freedoms we enjoy today were defended by these veterans and many others from different conflicts.”
The May trip already is full, but veterans interested in participating in possible future opportunities can apply by calling 903-534-3076.
