Tyler Area Employment Rate Climbs

March’s rate also was a climb from the 92.5 percent employment rate reported for March 2011, according to the latest figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission.

“The Texas economy continues to show strength,” Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Tom Pauken said in a statement. “We’ve remained below the national unemployment rate for 63 straight months and Texas continues to show private sector job growth.”
The country had an employment rate of 91.6 percent for March, up from 91.3 percent the month before and 90.8 percent in March 2011.

Texas added 10,900 jobs in March, marking the 20th consecutive month of growth in the state’s total nonfarm employment, which now marks 10,741,700 positions. Texas added 245,700 jobs during the year for an annual job growth rate of 2.3 percent.
Private sector employers in the state added 8,000 jobs during the month, for a total of 300,600 private sector job gains during the year for an annual growth rate of 3.5 percent.
“The prospects for Texas job seekers continue to improve,” Texas Workforce Commissioner representing labor Ronny Congleton said. “We encourage those still searching for employment or affected by layoffs to contact a local Workforce Solutions Office to take full advantage of the services they offer.”
In Texas, eight of the 11 major industries added jobs during the month. Leisure and hospitality took the lead with the addition of 6,000 positions, the Texas Workforce Commission reported. During the past year, the industry added 49,900 jobs for an annual growth rate of 4.8 percent.
Texas’ manufacturing industry added 2,900 jobs in March, for a total of 23,700 positions gained over the year and an annual growth rate of 2.9 percent.

The Midland area had the highest employment rate, 96.3 percent, in the state for March, while the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission and the Brownsville-Harlingen areas tied for the lowest employment rates in Texas, at 89.3 percent each.
