Charges Filed In Three-Car Accident From Saturday Night
Department of Public Safety officials confirmed that the driver who struck two vehicles Saturday night is charged with a second-degree felony.

Jorge Cordera-Varela, 41, is charged with intoxicated manslaughter, Department of Public Safety Trooper Jean Dark said Monday afternoon. Cordera-Varela was driving a truck on the wrong side of the road on U.S. Highway 69 around 9 p.m. Saturday when he hit a passenger car driven by Jansen Blake Farris, 22, of Bullard. Sydney Farris, 2, died as a result of injuries suffered in the accident, according to an accident report filed with the department.

Seven other people suffered injuries in the accident, which involved three vehicles.

After striking the Farris' car, Cordera-Varela's truck flew into the air and landed on another truck, which had five passengers inside.

Officials at the Smith County Jail said Cordera-Varela was booked into the jail at 1:27 a.m. Sunday morning and was in custody on a $100,000 bond as of 4 p.m.
