Fantasic Job, April 29
RAVES: Matt Bingham, Smith County District Attorney, and his staff do a fantastic job for Smith County. They are constantly under attack because the job they are charged with performing implicates people for criminal activity and is not always a popular one. They are charged with the duty of investigating potential criminal activity and taking that evidence to a grand jury which consists of unbiased residents of Smith County. It is the grand jury that considers the evidence and returns the indictments. The district attorney and his staff merely act upon the indictments handed up by the grand jury.

Lately, there have been public allegations of the district attorney and his office acting with “political” motives as a result of recent indictments handed down by the grand jury. I know absolutely nothing about the facts of any of those cases, but I do know that the grand jury handing up those indictments did evaluate the evidence it relied on to support those indictments. These are unbiased Smith County residents charged with the job of reviewing the evidence in a case and rendering a decision on whether the evidence supports a criminal indictment.

Our district attorney and his staff do not have the time to spend fighting political battles when they are faced with the daily challenges of trying to protect the residents of Smith County from murderers, rapists, child molesters, thieves and other violent criminals. Even if a “political” motive existed in a case, the grand jury is the tool in which our legal system makes sure criminal indictments are only handed down based upon sound evidence of criminal activity, not political motives. The district attorney’s job is a very hard one and it takes a special person to do it. Hats off to Matt Bingham and the assistant district attorneys who work with him for the great job they do for Smith County. Thank you for the time and effort ya’ll put in to ensure the citizens of Smith County live and work in a safe community.
