Candidate Forum Set May 1
Cherokee County voters have another opportunity to learn about their Republican candidates before next month's primary.

The Cherokee County Republican Club will host its second candidate forum at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at the Woodmen of the World Building, 1800 College Ave. in Jacksonville. The building is slated to open at 6 p.m. so people can talk with candidates before the forum.

Attendees won't be able to ask candidates questions, but a moderator will pose questions submitted by residents and club members.

The Cherokee County Republican Club began planning its second forum shortly after the first forum in February, and commitment letters were sent to candidates last month to be returned to the forum committee.

“We had a difficult time going forward, not knowing what the elections procedures were going to be due to the upheavals in the election process with the redistricting lawsuits,” Forum Committee Chairman Robert Burns said in a news release. “When the first forum was held … at Jacksonville College, the May 29 Primary date had not been set because of the lawsuits over redistricting. At our executive board meeting the end of February, we designated our May 1 meeting for another candidate forum and appointed a forum committee. We have worked from there.

An estimated 150 to 200 people attended the first forum, which included candidates for county and state offices.
The candidate forum is open to the public.
