A longtime Smith County Sheriff’s deputy succumbed to injuries he received in the line of duty last week when he was attacked by an injured cow.

Sheriff J.B. Smith confirmed that 54-year-old Robert Britton died today following several days in intensive care at East Texas Medical Center.

Smith said last week that Britton was attacked by a cow that had been struck by a vehicle on Farm-to-Market Road 344 west near Bullard.

Smith said this afternoon that his entire department was saddened.

“This just goes to show that no routine call is ever routine,” he said.
