ATHENS -- Tyler Junior College survived a Trinity Valley Hail Mary pass to the 2-yard line on the final play of the game as the Apaches escaped with a 29-24 nail-biting win over the Cardinals on Saturday night at Bruce Field.

The Apaches (2-2, 1-1 Southwest Junior College Football Conference) drove 91 yards in 11 plays for the winning touchdown -- Ky'Ordric Black's 2-yard scamper with 11 seconds left in regulation.

The drive, which started with 4:40 left on the clock, featured a Trinity Valley personal foul penalty on second down that pushed the ball across midfield. The Apaches converted two third downs -- quarterback Jeffrey Claybon's 8-yard keeper and Black's 2-yard TD.

Other big plays on the game-winning series were tight end CJ Ogbuehi's 17-yard reception from backup quarterback Luke Halpin, and Jamal Mitchell's 25-yard run.

The Cardinals (2-2, 1-1) were left with seven seconds and 60 yards to cover. Si'Darius Blackshire completed a 10-yard pass on the first play and then scrambled around behind the line of scrimmage before letting fly a pass that came down in a crowd, but in the arms of Derel Walker, who was corralled at the 2-yard line as the game ended.

TVCC's Jeremiah Williams caught a swing pass from Blackshire and ran 16 yards into the end zone for the tying touchdown with 4:42 left, and Jaimie Salazar's extra point gave the Cardinals a 24-23 lead.

The teams combined for 24 points in a marathon third quarter, which featured a 32-yard fumble return for a Trinity Valley touchdown to tie the game at 17-17.

The Apaches rebounded from the turnover with two Jorge Martinez field goals (32, 40) to give the Apaches a 23-17 lead with 12 minutes to play in regulation.

The game opened with eight consecutive punts before the Apaches scored on a two-play drive.

In a battle of field position, the TJC defense forced a three-and-out and Trinity Valley punted 31 yards from its own 14, setting up the Apaches 45 yards from paydirt. Claybon completed a 17-yard pass to Desmond Marrs, and then Claybon kept around right end for a 28-yard touchdown with 13:26 left in the second quarter. After a long delay for a TVCC injury, Jorge Martinez added the PAT to make it 7-0.

The ensuing kickoff by Carlos Rabago went out of bounds, and the Apaches were also assessed a 15-yard penalty to set up the Cardinals at the TJC 45.

Trinity Valley picked up two first downs on the drive to set up Jaimie Salazar's 38-yard field goal with 9:28 left in the second quarter.

Martinez kicked a 32-yard field goal with six minutes left in the half, even though the Apaches did not gain a yard on three plays. They set up on offense from the Trinity Valley 15-yard line after defensive end Josh Theut recovered a Cardinals fumble.
