Duchesses Join Texas Rose Festival Court Oct, 14-16
Nineteen out-of-town duchesses will take part in the coronation of Queen Mary-Lawson Bracken Walden during the 2010 Texas Rose Festival, "Tyler -- Tapestry of Blessings," scheduled for Oct. 14-16 in Tyler. These young women are introduced below as a prelude to the festival. Their photographs appear in today's Tyler Courier-Times--Telegraph.
Madeline Susan Alford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Alford of Dallas, and Mr. and Mrs. Randy Wimberly of Frisco, is a sophomore at The University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. She is majoring in English, with a minor in Spanish. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She served this past year as an officer for Tri Delt as communication chair.
Miss Alford attended Centennial High School in Frisco, where she graduated magna cum laude. While in high school, she was active on the yearbook and newspaper committee, and was yearbook editor her senior year. She was also chosen to participate in The Independent Study and Mentorship Program her senior year.
She was a camper for four years at Camp Waldemar in Hunt.

Carolyn Wynne Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Glenn Campbell, of Vicksburg, Miss., attends the University of Mississippi. She is a member of the Sally McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College, as well as the Trent Lott Leadership School. She is a public policy leadership major and a Spanish minor. She is a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was named to the Chancellor's honor roll in spring of 2010 and the Lambda Sigma honor society.
Miss Campbell was an honor graduate from St. Andrew Episcopal School in Jackson, Miss., where she was an active member of the Mock Trial and Debate teams. She was also a member of the admissions team and the swim team. She will be escorted by Drew Gray.
Cameron Nancy Carlock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George David Carlock III of Dallas, is a sophomore at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where she is majoring in politics with a minor in poverty studies. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, where she serves on the Standards Committee and Recruitment Committee. Miss Carlock is also a member of the W&L Student Recruitment Committee and serves as a campus tour guide. She is a peer counselor to freshman students, works in the admissions office, serves on the Fancy Dress committee, attends Reformed University Fellowship, and is a member of the Higher Education Ministry at Robert E. Lee Memorial Church in Lexington, Va. Miss Carlock made the Honor Roll and the Dean's List her freshman year.
Miss Carlock is an honor graduate of the Episcopal School of Dallas, which she attended for 12 years. She was a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Miss Carlock worked on the ESD yearbook all four years of high school and was named co-editor-in-chief her senior year. She was co-president of the Spanish Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions her senior year. Miss Carlock was elected as a member of the Honor Council her junior and senior year. She was also a four-year varsity tennis player and was named co-captain her senior year. Miss Carlock was a homecoming queen nominee, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and was the recipient of the Headmaster's Prize her senior year. She was a member of the National Charity League of Dallas for six years, during which she volunteered for many philanthropies with her mother and sister, her favorites being the ARC of Dallas and the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. Miss Carlock and her family attend Highland Park United Methodist Church.
An eight-year camper, Miss Carlock attended Camp Waldemar in Hunt, and has returned as a counselor for the past three summers teaching tennis and swimming. She served as the scribe of the Tejas tribe and paddled in Big Blue War Canoe, and she received medals in tennis, canoeing, and swimming throughout her camping career. She was named the Ideal Waldemar Girl of First Term 2007.
Miss Carlock continued her love for community service through a summer internship at Genesis Women's Shelter in Dallas. She volunteers at Project Horizon Domestic Violence Shelter in Lexington, Va., and she applies this service learning opportunity toward her minor in poverty studies.
Miss Carlock was presented as a duchess in the 2009 Waco Cotton Palace Pageant and will be presented at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Debutante Ball in February 2011.
Family members who have participated in past Rose Festivals include her mother, Trixie Beall Carlock, who was a 1969 lady-in-waiting. Her grandmother, Trixie McClung Beall, was a 1947 duchess, 1967 chair of the Rose Show, 1971 Coronation chair, 1980 Tea chairman, and chairman of the Queen's Ball. Her grandfather, Upton Beall, served as the 1972 Order of the Rose president and 1988 Texas Rose Festival president. Miss Carlock is sponsored by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Upton Beall of Tyler. She will be escorted by Alec Yale.
Olivia Lauren Flores, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Clyde Flores of Houston, is a sophomore at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she plans to major in finance and economics, with a minor in English literature. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi, and was elected social chair for her pledge class. She plays on the SMU polo team, as well as the Women's Club Lacrosse team during the year.
Miss Flores graduated from St. John's School in Houston, where she was an AP Scholar in world history, English language and English literature. She received the National Latin Exam Gold Medal of Merit and was a National Merit Commended Student. She participated in the Maverick Guard Spirit Club, served as the student representative on St. John's School's ICASE Task Force, and was also a member of St. John's School Service Community.
Miss Flores lettered in field hockey, soccer and Lacrosse while at St. John's School. She was a member of the 2008 SPC Championship Lacrosse Team, and the 2008 SPC Championship Field Hockey Team. She was captain of both the 2009 SPC Championship Lacrosse team, and the varsity soccer team her senior year.
Miss Flores has volunteered her time serving the Habitat for Humanity, Homes for Hope, Bayou Bend Clean-up, and as an officer of Big Brothers/Big Sisters Mentor Program.
Miss Flores attended Camp Waldemar in Hunt from 2000-2007, where she was voted Best All-Around for the Tejas tribe in 2007. She has also spent summers studying abroad in Italy and London, completing courses in Latin studies, globalization, and international relations. She will be presented as a debutante at the International Debutante Ball in New York later this year, and at the Allegro Ball and the River Oaks Debutante Ball in Houston next year.

Helen Frances Gardner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley D. Gardner, of Dallas, is a sophomore at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where she is majoring in public relations. She is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. At TCU, she has volunteered at Habit of Humanity, building houses through Frog House. She is involved in Reformed University Fellowship.
Miss Gardner graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She also participated in Habitat for Humanity, Hi-Lites Girls Service Club, Prom Committee and Community Service Council. She was on the junior varsity tennis team when they won 4A State Champions.
Miss Gardner has volunteered her time serving the homeless through Hunger Busters in Dallas. She went on a mission trip to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and to New York City with her church, Park Cities Presbyterian Church. She worked for Sebastian and Associates Construction Group her senior year.
Miss Gardner attended Waldemar Camp and Kanakuk Colorado. She was a counselor at Camp Waldemar this past summer. Miss Gardner has traveled extensively throughout the world. Also, she is a certified scuba diver.
Miss Gardner was presented as a duchess at the Waco Cotton Palace Pageant in Waco in April 2009. Her brother, John Madison Gardner, was an escort at the Waco Cotton Pageant in 2008.

Elizabeth Jennings Jones, daughter of Mr. Mark Allen Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Leslie Mako of San Antonio, is a sophomore at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where she is majoring in Early Childhood Development. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Miss Jones graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a member of The Olmos yearbook staff, serving as Co-Editor, Student Council, Interact Community Service Club, Texas Association for Future Educators, Helping and Nurturing Developing Students Mentoring Group, and Senior Girls Party Committee. She also served as a teacher's assistant at Howard Early Childhood Center. She was elected cheerleader all four years, serving as Captain of both the Junior Varsity and Varsity Squads, and received the Universal Cheerleaders Association Leadership Award.
Miss Jones has volunteered her time each summer at Respite Care of San Antonio, has served food to the homeless at the San Antonio Methodist Ministry Shelter, and has participated in the St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Annual Christmas Giving Tree Project, Christian Assistance Ministry Toy Delivery, and Elf Louise Christmas Project. McBride Elizabeth Macatee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Pettit Macatee IV, of Dallas, is a sophomore at The University of Texas, where she is majoring in advertising. She is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and is also a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, achieving University Honors her freshman year.
Miss Macatee graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, where she was a member of a variety of organizations, including National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Community Service Council and Best Buddies, serving as president and representing the chapter at the Best Buddies International Leadership Conference.
Miss Macatee participated in competitive soccer with The Texas Spirit Soccer Club of Dallas and as a member of the Highland Park Varsity Soccer team. She received The Highland Park Servant Leadership Award, contributing more than 800 hours of community service. She attended Camp Mystic for 10 years as a camper and has worked two years as a counselor. Among the honors she received while at Camp Mystic, she especially enjoyed serving as the Kiowa Tribe captain. Miss Macatee was presented earlier this year as a duchess of the Royal Court by The Admirals Club of Austin.
McBride Elizabeth Macatee is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stuart III of Dallas and Mr. and Mrs. George Pettit Macatee III, also of Dallas. Miss Macatee is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Alexander of Tyler.
Allison Wynne Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Matthews, all of Hondo, is a sophomore at The University of Texas in Austin. She is in the Cockerell School of Engineering, where she is majoring in biomedical engineering and is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Miss Matthews is a member of the Women for Engineering at UT, a junior member of summer rush team for her sorority, and works part time as a nanny.
Miss Matthews graduated from Hondo High School, where she was salutatorian, a member of the National Honor Society, Gifted and Talented Program, and Student Council, and was selected to serve as a Peer Tutor. She was a four-year letterman on the varsity tennis team, advancing to the regional tournament all four years and the state tournament her junior year. She was also active in the Future Farmers of America, where she had a reserve and a grand champion animal.
In her community, Miss Matthews is a member of the United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Methodist Youth Foundation, taught vacation Bible School, and volunteered for many service projects in the church and community. She also has served as a volunteer for Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio for the past five years, San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo School Tours Guide, and Project Christmas.
Miss Matthews was an active member of the Hondo 4-H Club, where she held the offices of treasurer, and County Council delegate. She advanced to the State Judging contest in three consecutive years and showed cattle and goats.
Miss Matthews attended Camp Huawni for nine years.
Her family has had many Rose Festival participants throughout the years, including her mother, Susan Mobley Patterson, a 1983 duchess, and sister, Lauren Matthews, a 2008 duchess. Her aunt and uncle, Jo Ann Mobley Grooms, 1980 duchess, and Randy Grooms, 1980 escort, have served the Rose Festival in many capacities during the past 26 years. Her cousins include Carter Grooms, 2006 escort; Conner Grooms, 2001 scepter bearer; Griffin Mobley, 2009 escort; Melissa Mobley, 1999 duchess; Lisa Mobley, 2001 duchess; and Allison Mobley, 2002 duchess.

Kailey Carole Milliorn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Vaden Milliorn of Dallas. She attends Texas Tech University, where she is majoring in petroleum engineering. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. She was awarded the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering and the Strive for Honor scholarships.
Miss Milliorn graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, where she was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, HPHS Hi-Lites Club, HPHS Prom Committee, ASTRA, Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society. She was a member of National Charity League, where she served as president and treasurer. She also volunteered her time for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, Park Cities YMCA, and Hunger Busters. She is a member of Park Cities Baptist Church and attended Camp Longhorn for 10 years.

Lily Hawes Morris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sterling McKinley Morris, of Corpus Christi and San Clemente, Calif., and granddaughter of Mrs. Edwin Hawes III of Wharton, and the late Mr. Hawes, and the late Mr. And Mrs. George W. Morris of Amarillo.
Miss Morris is a sophomore at The University of Texas, where she is majoring in journalism in the School of Communications. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Miss Morris graduated from W.B. Ray High School. In high school, she was a member and secretary of the National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, editor of the center spread newspaper, and a member of the tennis team. She is a member of First United Methodist Church and was a leader at Christian Adventure Camp.
Miss Morris attended and has been a counselor at Camp Waldemar for Girls in Hunt, where she was a leader in various positions in the Tejas tribe, and where she became good friends of several of the duchesses in the 2010 Rose Festival. Her hobbies include traveling, photography, surfing, quail hunting and socializing.
Miss Morris is a visiting duchess and is honored to be the first in her family to be presented in the Rose Festival. She was presented in the Admirals Club of Austin earlier this year. Miss Morris is sponsored by Mr. And Mrs. Bruce Faulkner of Tyler. She will be escorted by Ben Pinkston.
Samantha Parrillo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Parrillo Sr., of Chicago, Ill., is a sophomore at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she is majoring in corporate communications and public affairs, with potential minors in both English and Spanish. Miss Parrillo graduated from the prestigious Latin School of Chicago, which she attended for 14 years. She graduated from Latin at the top of her class, while she devoted her time to numerous clubs and organizations.
Miss Parrillo co-organized her school's booster club, participated in China Care, a group that funds surgeries for orphans, and was an avid member of her school's STAND program - Students Taking Action Now for Darfur. She earned varsity letters in both field hockey and track and field, and participated in her school's debate team, receiving statewide recognition.
Miss Parrillo also dedicated much of her after-school time to community service. Her efforts include working at a home for those with assisted living conditions, and organizing a walk for those with cystic fibrosis. Currently, Miss Parrillo is pursuing her bachelor of arts, as she hopes to one day become a journalist or lawyer. Some of her works have been featured in the national literary magazine, "Red, White and Green."
Miss Parrillo is the first from her family to participate in the Rose Festival.
Taylor Leigh Ann Rees is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Stephen Rees of New Orleans, La. As a rising senior in high school, Miss Rees and her varsity volleyball team attended a volleyball camp at The University of Texas. That experience convinced her of her desire to become a student at The University of Texas. She is a now a sophomore at The University of Texas at Austin, studying communications and planning to major in broadcast sports journalism She is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was named to the Dean's List in the spring of 2010.
During her freshmen year, Miss Rees was one of the Co-Founders of Forget Me Not NOLA, a nonprofit organization founded by six young women displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The organization's mission is to give other displaced or disadvantaged children hope for their future by raising funds to provide present day care and the opportunity for sustainable success of their communities via schools, clean water, and healthy housing. Miss Rees and her co-founders organized their first fundraiser, High Heels for High Hopes, to benefit Sentebale, an organization that helps orphans and vulnerable children of Lesotho and was founded by Prince Seeiso of the Lesotho royal family and Prince Harry of the British royal family. They attended an event in New York in June of this year and announced to Prince Harry and Sentebale that they raised approximately $230,000.
Miss Rees graduated from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, La., where she was All-State in volleyball and Academic All-State in volleyball and soccer. Miss Rees captained both the varsity volleyball and varsity soccer teams during her senior year. She received the Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Offensive Player Awards for volleyball and the Coach's Award for Leadership and Dedication to Soccer. She also received the Headmaster's Award, which recognizes personal growth and accomplishment, contribution to the life of the school, embodiment of the school's core values, and concern for and support of others. She was selected to represent Newman at the Anti-Defamation League's Unity through Understanding Day in 2008. During her senior year she chaired Volleyball for the Cure at Newman, raising approximately $40,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Miss Rees captained and was a committee member for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team for Greater New Orleans Area High Schools, a member of Students Against Destructive Behavior, a member of Students Towards Ending Prejudice, Hi-Y (student legislator) and a member of the Cultural Awareness Club. She also participated in a Global Works Community Service and Spanish Immersion Program in Costa Rica. She volunteered for RHINO, "Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans," which does home construction in New Orleans, as part of the rebuilding of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina; volunteered in the restoration process of City Park to plant new marsh plants in park ponds, trees and floral bushes; and volunteered as part of a team to plant new trees along city boulevards once flooded by Hurricane Katrina.
Miss Rees was presented as a lady - in-waiting in 2000 and bearer of flowers in 2006 for the New Orleans Carnival Organization of Hermes. She was also presented as a lady-in waiting for the New Orleans Carnival Organizations of Osiris and Prophets of Persia in 2008.

Mary Cristina Schooler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Stephen Schooler, of Dallas, is a sophomore at Elon University in Elon, N.C., where she is majoring in communications with a minor in Spanish. She is a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She has one brother, Samuel Clement Drake Schooler, who is a senior at The Episcopal School of Dallas.
Miss Schooler graduated from The Episcopal School of Dallas in Dallas, where she was a member of the Honor Roll, a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, senior editor of the award-winning Eagle Edition, class secretary and a High School Ambassador. She was a member of the varsity Lacrosse and varsity cross country teams.
Miss Schooler has been a counselor with The Arc of Dallas, a camp for mentally disabled children in Dallas, for the past four years and has participated in Habitat for Humanity Global Village Youth Missions to Chile, Hungary and Ecuador. Throughout her high school career Miss Schooler volunteered her time with the Jubilee Park and Community Center in Dallas. She enjoys running and hiking, travel, and fly-fishing. She was presented as a duchess at the Cotton Palace Pageant in Waco in 2009 and was a princess to the Court of the Krewe of Excalibur in Metairie, La., in 2006.
Family members who have participated in Past Rose Festivals include her grandmother, Marylee Cowden Kellogg, 1949 duchess. Miss Schooler is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Guy Underwood Griffeth, of Dallas. Her escort will be Christian Klouda.
Catherine Laine Sowell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Edwin Sowell, of Dallas. She has three siblings: Zach, Nick and Amy. She currently attends The University of Texas at Austin and is pursuing a degree in public relations. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and is currently the sorority historian.
She is a graduate of Highland Park High School, where she was a member of National Honor Society, a senior class representative in Student Council, treasurer of 65 Roses, and a member of FCA as well as Hi-Lites. In high school, she was a member of The Highland Belles Drill Team, where she served as lieutenant her senior year.
This summer, Miss Sowell was a camp counselor at Camp Mystic and city rush captain for her sorority. While in high school, she went on two mission trips to Guatemala to help children in orphanages. She also volunteered her time with National Charity League, where she was vice president of programs and sergeant at arms, Genesis Women's Shelter, Center of Hope, and Central Dallas Ministries. Miss Sowell was also a co-founder and member of Library of Hope, where she collected books for agencies that help children of under-privileged families.
She enjoys all sports, hanging out with her friends, vacations, dancing and laughing. She was presented in La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas in 2010. She will be escorted by Chase Munster.
Rachel Lynn Terry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Ross Terry, of Dallas, is a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., where she is majoring in journalism with minors in both French and art history. She is a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and volunteers with OU Women's Outreach. She just completed her study abroad program in London this summer in British media studies through OU. She had previously attended a summer abroad program at BLS Ecole de Francais in Biarritz, France, in 2008.
Miss Terry graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, where she started Highland Park's first girls field hockey team with her younger sister, Savannah, which is now in its third season. Throughout high schoo, Miss Terry worked on the school newspaper staff and volunteered through Community Service Council and Hi-Lites Girls Service Club. She served as officer in A.S.T.R.A. (Ability Service Training Responsibility Achievement (affiliated with Altrusa) and as vice president of Fashion Club, an organization benefiting Attitudes 'N Attire. She also volunteered at the Nelson Children's Center with her church, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Miss Terry has traveled all over the world, but extensively in western Europe. She attended Camp Waldemar for eight years.

Staley Jeanette Tomforde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wynne Tomforde, of Houston, is a sophomore at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where she is majoring in history. She is a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She is involved in volunteering at the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Miss Tomforde graduated summa cum laude from Second Baptist School in Houston, where she was a member of the National Honors Society and was named an Advanced Placement Scholar. She also participated in Key Club, Spanish Club and The Cultural Society. She was a member of the varsity tennis team, who won the state championship in 2007, and was the team's chaplain for three years.
Miss Tomforde was a member of the National Charity League for seven years. She held the positions of vice president in 2007-2008 and president in 2008-2009. Through the organization, she focused her attention on the Star of Hope Homeless Shelter and M.D. Anderson Children's Hospital.

A seven-term camper at Camp Waldemar, she is a graduate of J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, where she was in the National Honor Society, Pearce Keepers, Sideline Sweethearts, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Young Life, Campaigners and the National Charity League. She is a sophomore student at Texas Tech University, where she is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and is a Kappa Picker. Her grandfather, Mr. Ross, is a former president of the Texas Rose Festival Association; her mother and aunts are former ladies-in-waiting; and her brothers, Bryan and Ben Twiss, and cousins, John, Will, and Charles Thach and Ross and Whitman Strain have served as escorts in previous Rose Festivals. Hallie Bracken West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy West, of San Antonio, is a sophomore at Baylor University. She is majoring in public relations with a minor in child and family studies. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She also volunteers at CareNet Waco.
Miss West graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, where she was a Student Council officer, ran cross country, track, and was an officer of the Senior Girls Dance. She was presented as a Symphony Belle her senior year. She was active in Young Life, and has always been interested in mission work.
She has spent time during the last three summers in Zambia, Africa, working with Legacy Missions and the orphans they care for. She is founder of "Bwela Kuno", a jewelry company, whose profit goes to The Tree of Life Village in Zambia.

Carlson "Callie" Elizabeth Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall R. Young Sr., of Fort Worth, is currently residing in Los Angeles, Calif., where she is a working actor. She has deferred her enrollment at Southern Methodist University, while she fulfills her acting obligations. From 2007-2009, she starred on Disney Channel's "As The Bell Rings." Since then, she has booked recurring roles on HBO's "True Blood" and ABC's "Pretty Little Liars." She also recently completed an ABC Family TV-movie, and the independent film "The Perfect Student." In spring 2010, she was cast in a recurring role for the ABC pilot "Cutthroat."
Miss Young graduated from Fort Worth Country Day School. There, she was a four-year varsity cheerleader, an International Thespian Society member, and a Cooking for a Cause participant. During her senior year, she was president of the Global Awareness Club. She was elected four years in a row to be one of two Falcon Force leaders per grade, to represent the school. In 2007, she wrote a play called "Back to Africa," that went on to be nominated second in The Playwright Competition.
From 2007-2008, Miss Young volunteered at South Hi Mount Elementary, where she was a cheerleading coach for 7- to 10-year-old girls. From 2008-2009, she volunteered at Fort Worth Country Day's Breakthrough program, helping underprivileged children from Fort Worth, to strive for higher academic excellence.
