Texas Native To Take Charge Of Second Command In Iraq
A native of Houston and a 2001 graduate of Spring Hill High School, Capt. Wilford L. Garvin III, 27, is scheduled to take command of a second company in Iraq.
The honor of commanding a second company is afforded only to officers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential. Garvin has moved from the command of Cobra Company, 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 69th Armored Regiment in Babil Province, Iraq, and will take command of Headhunter Troop, 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division in Wasit Province, Iraq, in July.
Garvin's performance in command of a tank company was lauded for partnering with multiple senior Iraqi army and police leaders that allowed him and his soldiers to reduce mortar, rocket and IED attacks, as well as providing numerous economic projects and micro-grants to create long-lasting positive changes in the southern part of Babil Province, Iraq.
Garvin is the son of Kathryn Garvin, of Longview, and Wilford L. Garvin, of Kemah. Garvin and his wife, Alexandria, formerly of San Antonio, are stationed at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. Garvin, an armor officer who received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps, graduated summa cum laude from Steven F. Austin State University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in history.
