On Alumni Day, TJC Splits Pair With Kilgore
By JOE BUIE
Staff Writer

Tyler Junior College celebrated not only Alumni Day, but also two exciting basketball games on Saturday.

But there turned out to be no icing on the cake for Apache fans, who did not get a sweep against Kilgore College.

The Apache Ladies finished strong and pulled out an 82-72 win in the opener, but the TJC men dropped a heartbreaker in the nightcap, 68-67 at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

Men
The Rangers (17-10, 10-7 Region XIV) snapped a 10-game losing streak to TJC (16-9, 9-8), and also won for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

The Apaches had a shot at the win, but Byron Maxson missed an open 3-pointer from the corner. Dane Smith got the rebound for Kilgore but he missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 3.2 seconds left.

Labree Sledge's halfcourt shot at the buzzer hit the top of the backboard, resulting in the Apaches' third loss in four games.

Kilgore, which lost to the Apaches by 22 points at home in early January, fell behind 11-0 on Saturday before quickly climbing out of the hole.

"They had a chance to quit in the first half when we had them down big and they rallied," TJC head coach Mike Marquis said. "They really beat us up on the boards in the second half. They hit some big threes, but their (second-chance points) were probably even more damaging."

TJC's last lead was 51-48, although there were three ties down the stretch.

Kilgore's Gentry Hines buried his sixth 3-pointer of the game at the 1:43 mark, but TJC point guard Mitch Marquis matched Hines on the other end to make it 67-67 with 1:32 to play.

The Rangers, who were at a free-throw disadvantage in the second half, finally shot a one-and-one with 26.4 seconds left as Derron Hobbs hit 1 of 2 to give Kilgore a 68-67 lead.

Freshman forward Malcolm Moore, who led the Apaches with 19 points, never got the ball on the final possession. Moore was 5-for-6 from the field and 9-for-16 from the foul line.

"We figured they were going to try to take away Malcolm and they were able to do that," coach Marquis said. "We ran a really nice set along the baseline; we got (Maxson) a great look. He's been playing great."

Maxson, a sophomore wing, finished with 12 points (5-for-8) and four assists.

The Apaches missed 10 free throws in the second half and were outrebounded 12-4 on offense.

Sophomore Johnathan Edwards posted a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) for TJC.

"We executed some good stuff down the stretch," Marquis said. "We got some very good looks. If either team shoots free throws in the 70 percent (range), they win close to double digits."

Hines, a freshman guard from Memphis, Tenn., poured in 23 points for the Rangers. He was 6-for-11 from 3-point range.

"One of the things we've been able to develop is a little bit of resilience and composure," said Kilgore head coach Brian Hoberecht, whose team trailed by eight with about 14 minutes left in regulation. "We withstood a fantastic start by Tyler. I really thought at halftime we had seen the best of what Tyler had to offer."

Women
The Apache Ladies (22-7, 11-6) proved to be resilient by overcoming 17 missed free throws to beat Kilgore (16-6, 9-6).

The back-and-forth battle featured 18 lead changes and eight ties before TJC closed the game on a 15-4 run.

Freshman point guard Latika Smith was the catalyst, scoring 10 points in a three-minute span and finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Smith made two free throws in the one-and-one to give her team a 69-68 lead with 3:09 left. After Kilgore lost the ball on a turnover, Nakia Ollison buried a 3-pointer for her only bucket from the field.

Kilgore missed a shot on the next possession, and Smith made 1 of 2 free throws. She grabbed the rebound off her miss and then scoring off a drive into the lane to make it 75-68.

The Lady Rangers excelled from the free throw line, making 25 of 34 attempts, but they were hurt by 14 second-half turnovers.

The Apache Ladies converted 53 percent of their field goals to offset a 15-for-32 showing on free throws.
