Blinn Rolls To Win Over Tyler Junior College Apaches
By JOE BUIE
Staff Writer

BRENHAM -- The No. 8 Blinn College Buccaneers seemed to be bored Saturday afternoon at Spencer Stadium. Some of their fans started leaving in the third quarter.

It was that type of day for Blinn, which registered its third straight ho-hum blowout victory over Tyler Junior College, 52-3, in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.

The Bucs have outscored the Apaches, 140-6, in the last three meetings.

TJC, 2-3 overall and 1-2 in league play, went into the game knowing it had to somehow pass the ball effectively to beat Blinn. The Apaches figured they wouldn't be able to compete by just running the ball -- like they did in last week's 44-34 loss to Navarro, and they were right.

But the Apaches failed to muster much of an aerial threat against Blinn (4-1, 2-1), which also stoned a TJC rushing attack that produced 314 yards last week.

It all added up to a terribly one-sided contest.

Sophomore quarterback Terrance Cain tossed three touchdown passes in a 35-0 first half that saw Blinn outgain TJC, 233-78. Cain, from Galena Park North Shore, finished his day 14-of-26 for 203 yards in only three quarters of action. He completed passes to seven different receivers.

On the other side, the Apaches went with a quarterback rotation of redshirt sophomore Stephen Schwark and true freshman Vincent McNeil.

Schwark, the starter, completed one pass in five attempts. He also threw an interception deep in TJC territory early in the second quarter to set Blinn up at the 14-yard line.

It took six plays for the Bucs to cash in the turnover, with Cain using play-action and tossing a 3-yard pass to 6-4 Prizell Brown for the touchdown. Blinn led 21-0 with 11:20 to play in the first half.

Chris Lacy's 27-yard kickoff return gave the Apaches the ball near midfield on the next series, but McNeil was sacked on third-and-6 from the Blinn 36 to end the mini-threat.

Blinn took over and marched 74 yards in 10 plays, with Cain throwing deep to Justin Rideau on fourth down for a 36-yard touchdown to make it 28-0 with 4:03 to play in the first half.

The Blinn defense then forced a three-and-out -- brought on by another sack of McNeil -- and the Buc offense needed just 32 seconds to score its fifth touchdown of the half.

The drive was aided by a 15-yard penalty on the TJC defense for kicking the ball after sacking Cain, who fumbled.

Instead of a fumble recovery deep in Blinn territory, the drive continued at the TJC 26.

The Apaches were heavily penalized for the second game in a row -- 10 for 128 yards, including six of the 15-yard variety.

Smoke Signals:

The postgame handshakes between the two teams ended prematurely when a skirmish almost broke out. It took a few moments for the coaches to get the two sides separated. ... After rushing for 116 yards against Navarro, McNeil had just 21 yards on 14 carries against Blinn. He was sacked three times. McNeil was 5-for-11 passing for 81 yards, including a 40-yard completion to Carthage's Man Allison to the Blinn 6-yard line on the final series of the game. ... The Apaches will entertain Kilgore next Saturday at 3 p.m.
