Lee’s Menard Races To Cross Country Win
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer

Robert E. Lee's Jennifer Menard and Spring Hill's Amber Moore were billed as the headliners entering the Tyler Lee Cross Country Invitational.

Neither disappointed as Menard took first in the Girls Open 4A-5A race and Moore won the Girls 3A-1A race Saturday morning at UT Tyler's Soccer Complex.

Menard held a comfortable lead until a final kick by Mabank's Chelsey Dillon closed the distance. Menard ended up finishing the two-mile course a second ahead of Dillon in a personal best time of 11 minutes and 41 seconds.

"Starting off there were a lot of girls that sprinted out, but I was patient," Menard said of her winning race. "In the end, it was me and two other girls, and they died on the hill.

"I didn't see (Dillon). I knew she was somewhere behind me. I just gave it all I had and finished with a PR."

Moore's race victory had no drama, thanks to the Spring Hill runner racing out in front and pulling away to a 41-second victory. Moore completed the course in a time of 11:46.

RACE TO THE FINISH: John Tyler’s Shane Floyd (in blue) competes in the Tyler Lee Cross Country Meet Saturday at UT Tyler. Floyd finished fifth.
"I don't like to stay in the pack, so I shoot out and try to just focus on my race," Moore said following her victory. "In the first 300 meters I left everyone else. I ran about 13:01 on this course last year, so I improved (a lot)."

Minta Spears of Bullard finished second and Jane Pinkston of Grace was third.

On the boys side, John Tyler's Shane Floyd took fifth in the 4A-5A Boys Open 5K race in a time of 16 minutes and 52 seconds. Tad Dickerson of Lufkin won the race with a time of 16:35 with Adrian Davis of Longview finishing second.

Floyd was happy getting a top five finish, but added he should've done better.

"I felt like I didn't give enough that I had," Floyd said. "I had too much at the end. I didn't spread it out. I know now what I need to do to get first."

The Boys 1A-3A race was won by Spencer Lynn of White Oak in a time of 16 minutes and nine seconds.

Forney won the girls 4A-5A team championship in 4A-5A with 34 points. In second was Dallas Skyline (64) with Lufkin (93) finishing third. Host Lee took fourth (145).

The boys 4A-5A team title was won by Lufkin, which totaled 33 points. Forney (70) was second and Lee (113) took third.

In the girls 1A-3A division, Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill took top honors with 118 points. Spring Hill (122) was second and Wills Point (124) third. The boys 1A-3A title was won by Atlanta with 63 points. Eustace (89) took second and Wills Point (121) finished third.
