Tyler Junior College Celebrates Opening Of New Residential Complex Today
By MEGAN MIDDLETON
Staff Writer

Tyler Junior College will celebrate the opening of the new Louise H. and Joseph Z. Ornelas Residential Complex at 4 p.m. today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception.

Mr. and Mrs. Ornelas will attend the event, as will Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass, TJC President Dr. Mike Metke and TJC board members. Tours of the facility will follow.

Dr. Austin Lane, vice president of student affairs at TJC, said that before this residence hall opened, the college could house about 600 students, but now it can house about 1,070.

The $29 million, 462-bed facility opened to students Aug. 22, Lane said.

A private opening for donors and others previously took place, he said.

"This ribbon cutting represents more of a community opening," he said. "It's really a way of saying, 'thank you' and allowing everyone to share in the success of opening up this beautiful facility."

The new facility is divided into "Building A" for female students and "Building B" for male students.

The first floor of "Building A" offers students a convenience store, cyber lounge, game room and large meeting room, Lane said.
