Brook Hill Guard Tops Hawkins Hawks, 28-7
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer

Bullard Brook Hill was without its top returning player, tailback Julius Johnson, who was held out because of injury.

It didn't matter. It just gave sophomore quarterback Tyler Baker a chance to shine as the Guard defeated Hawkins 28-7 Saturday in game 3 of the Tyler Classic at Mewbourne Field.

Baker finished with 100 yards rushing and a touchdown, and 62 yards passing with another score.

Brook Hill (1-0) did not give up an offensive touchdown in the victory. The Guard also forced two turnovers with senior Ross Nichols intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble.

Hawkins' lone touchdown was due to a spectacular 90-yard kickoff run by Dion Carter.

That made the score 14-7 midway through the second quarter. Brook Hill responded on the final play of the half.

With seconds remaining, Brook Hill receiver Travis Harris ran a stop-and-go to get past the defender and Baker found him with a 25-yard scoring strike. The third of four extra points by J.B. Moss made it 21-7 at halftime.

The Guard tacked on a final touchdown late in the fourth quarter with fullback Luke Molidor doing the honors from 6 yards out.
