August 28: Water Department Seeks Additional Income
Apparently the city of Whitehouse Water Department is in deeper financial trouble then the people are aware.
I received in the mail this past weekend a letter from the Whitehouse water department I found humorous enough to share with everyone. It was a collection notice stating my account has been turned over to collections for an unpaid balance past 30 days. First of all, I haven’t lived in Whitehouse for three years now (for the math-impaired that is 1095 days). How much is my unpaid balance? It is a whopping 89 cents!
The water department probably spent that and more in paper, ink, electricity, envelope, stamp, and manpower to collect less than a dollar from me.
Whitehouse, that’s your government in action! I have no problem paying them the money I owe them. That’s not the point. I just ask why it was not taken out of my deposit refund when they sent it back to me in full. Why did it take three years to collect? Why do I have a balance with them when my payments went to Walnut Grove water supply? All my dealings with the Whitehouse water department were to open the account and pay my deposit and close the account and receive my refund. Everything else went through Walnut Grove. Why now? Apparently after buying the water well land for $150,000, they need all the cash they can get!

They were gracious enough to offer me the option of paying half now and half later. I may just take them up on that offer! Now which check should I send first, the 44 cents or the 45 cents? Or should I show up with 89 pennies?
