Mr. Cal Thomas' praise for John McCain's response to Valdimir Putin's military thrust into Georgia, requiring that Russia mend its ways "or else" is laughable.

What does John McCain think the United States under his command (should that happen) would do to flesh out the "or else?" Will John McCain stamp his foot, or better still, pound the table with a shoe (a la Kruschev, so long ago), hold his breath until he turns purple, kicks and screams and throw a tantrum?

Since our refusal to treat the 9/11 horror as the criminal act it was, perpetrated by international outlaws, and to invade a sovereign country instead, we have successfully destroyed our credibility in the world and spread our military forces so thin you could read newsprint through them.

The American Empire is over. The American way of life (read: what we think our standard of living should be) will, after all have to be downscaled.

We are going to have to learn to get along with other nations in a world community, tighten our belts to repay our profligate debts, made do with less and quit acting like bullies when we cannot get our way.
