August 17: ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
For the long-term safety and security of the United States we must implement a "Manhattan Project" of energy independence.
If we don't address this problem soon the danger to our country will be greater than what we faced in World War II. At the present, we are being held hostage by religious fanatics and jack-leg dictators who would love to see our economy reduced to third world status.
We have the resources and expertise to start this project now before our energy options become too few. Our efforts should be directed to the most plentiful element in the universe, hydrogen. With the concentrated efforts of scientists and engineers, as they were used in developing the atomic bomb, we can manage a workable solution to our transportation fuel needs.
As citizens of the only forward thinking, capitalist republic left on planet earth we will probably have to go it alone. Of course, we have been doing this since WWII ended.
Going it alone has its compensations because America will not have to spend money and energy watching our back. In the meantime, our congressional leaders should authorize domestic and off-shore drilling very soon, before our country is wounded beyond repair.
