August 13: First In Line
I think Mr. Neeld (Aug. 7 Mailbox) may have misunderstood the GM Volt concept. The Volt would go 40 miles on a charge without using any gasoline, which would be adequate for the majority of small trips. If you need to go farther than 40 miles, a gasoline generator would kick in, recharging the battery and allowing a range of 400 miles on a single fill-up.

So for long trips the car would use gasoline at about the rate of a Prius (50 mpg). He would still be able to shop in Tyler, or even Dallas if he wants.

Of course, the Volt hasn't been built yet, and Toyota may beat them to it. Electric cars aren't going to be a problem. They are going to be a boon and I'll be first in line to get one.
