Flooding rains of between four and seven inches affected a swath of East Texas about 50 miles wide from southern Anderson into Central Smith County early Tuesday morning.

Pounds Field measured the heaviest in this unlucky piece of real estate with 6.65 inches. The city was close behind with 6.47 inches, while several of the stations in the Palestine area were between five and six inches. Rain began falling in Tyler just after 7 p.m. Monday, and was nearly constant until about 5 a.m. Tuesday. Three additional short rain bursts occurred through about 7 a.m.

Flash flood warnings were required for southern Smith, northern Cherokee, and an urban flood advisory for central Anderson Counties. The Smith warning was out from 2:45 through 8:45 a.m., the Cherokee warning between 2:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and the Anderson advisory between 4:45 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. The heaviest rains in Tyler came between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

During those two hours, 4.20 inches fell, of which 2.75 inches were between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday's rain set an August 12th daily rainfall record, and a single-day rainfall record for the month of August. The previous daily record was 4.13 inches, which came on August 12, 1992. The monthly single-day record had been 5.47 inches which fell on August 31, 1976.
