Area Sports Roundup: Snyder Leads In Hollytree Junior Club Tuesday
Scott Snyder fired a 78 to take the first round lead of the Hollytree Junior Club Golf Championship Tuesday at Hollytree Country Club.

He leads Christopher Brooks by six strokes.

Other leaders are Hunter Scammahorn (Boys 10-13), Christopher Wilhelmi (Boys 8-9) and Haley Mills (Girls Division). The second and final round is today.

Co-Ed State Tournament Set For Lindsey
The Texas Amateur Softball Association and the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department is hosting 2008 Texas ASA Co-Ed Slow Pitch Softball State Championship Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Lindsey Park.

Teams from all over Texas will be competing for the right to advance to the ASA National Championship in Dothan, Ala., Sept. 18-21.

The state championship game is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday on Field No. 5.

Tyler teams taking part at Outta the Parkers, Hopson Chiropractic, Up & Coming, and Energizers, Ryde-R-Die.

Other teams include: Austin Take it EC, Caldwell Ridin Dirty, Killeen Untouchables, Longview Stop Looking, Longview Krunk, Austin Salt Lick, San Antonio TNS, Austin Villafranca Sun Devils, DeKalb Express, Nacogdoches Texas Transco, Ennis My Attitude and Garrison Game Over.


Longview Summer Slam
LONGVIEW — Hinsley Park is playing host to a men’s Softball Summer Slam on Aug. 2.

There will be prizes for first-, second, and third-place. The tournament will have ASA Rules and umpires, plus a 55-minute time limit. Contact Mike Cranford by July 31 at 903-237-9919.


Old Timers Basketball Game Set For Saturday
Old timers will have the chance to show that they’ve still got what it takes at men’s and women’s basketball games to be held on Saturday at the Glass Recreation Center, 509 W. 32nd Street in Tyler. It all starts at 11 a.m.

The Old Timers Basketball Game consultants are Charles E. Booker and Charles Craddock.

Pre-Game activities will include performances by Old School Cheerleaders coordinated by Willie “Cookie” Garrison. This special event is being sponsored by the Tyler Chapter of Chums, Inc.

Chums, Inc. established in 1952, is a national non-profit organization that provides opportunities for women to meet in friendship and fun, to encourage a spirit of helpfulness, and to use their many talents in service to the community, according to event coordinator, Greta Moore-Dixon.

The organization, consisting of 52 chapters nationwide, promotes civic, cultural, educational, and social improvement. The newly chartered chapter of the Tyler Chums continues its commitment to the Chums’ national theme, “Listen To The Children”, by promoting and educating positive change throughout the community. One of the chapter’s service project is “Kidz4Kidz”, a virtual community/forum in which youngsters may voice their opinions on such topics as drugs, gangs, parental issues, peer pressure, sexual abstinence, and school, Moore-Dixon said.

Admission to the games is $5 ($3 for children under 12).


ET Storm Conducting Football Tryouts
The East Texas Storm semi-pro football team will be holding try-outs for the 2009 season.

Tryouts will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday at Pollard Park in Tyler.
