A fire destroyed an unoccupied, furnished mobile home on County Road 3211 on Sunday after a pit fire burned out of control, Smith County Fire Marshall Marilynn Wilson said.
She said a neighbor left a burn pit unattended, which allowed the fire to spread over four acres and destroy the mobile home.
Ms. Wilson said the man living in a storage building on the property awoke from a nap around 3 p.m. to the building filled with smoke.
She said the water lines leading to the building had been burned, leaving him no means of controlling the fire.
Although no one was injured, her advice is to “caution people if they’re going to burn, they’ve got to watch it,” Ms. Wilson said.
