Fire Destroys Vacant Mobile Home
By MALENA OGLES

WINONA — The cause of a fire that burned a vacant mobile home and more than 2 acres of land Saturday afternoon is still unknown.

A family driving back to Forth Worth from Shreveport on Interstate 20 stopped to report the fire a little before 3 p.m.

The driver, after calling 911, drove back to the scene to help the Winona Volunteer Fire Department extinguish the blaze.

“Four months ago I was driving out here and saw another fire in this area and stopped to help … crazy,” said former firefighter Steve Roberts.

A pile of tires nearby that caught fire filled the air with black smoke along County Road 3119.

Nelson Brumley, chief of the Winona Volunteer Fire Department, said that when firefighters arrived the building was a total loss.

Winona, with the help of Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department, was able to protect a second manufactured home from catching fire, but the blaze had already spread to a wooded area behind the first burning mobile home.

Brumley added that dry conditions and wind fueled the fire.

“I don’t think anyone was living in the home,” Brumley said.

The investigation will be turned over the Smith County Fire Marshals Office.
