Clyde, Herwood Earn Spots
BULLARD - Cal Clyde and Chapman Herwood earned berths in the Texas State Junior Golf Championship during a qualifying tournament Thursday at Eagle's Bluff Country Club.

Clyde, who will be a senior at Grace Community School in the fall, shot a 76 on the 6,363-yard layout. Herwood, who is on the golf team at Robert E. Lee High School, carded a 77.

Other scores in the field were: Grant Gresham, of Henderson, 84; Zach Smith of Carthage, 85; and William Estes of Tyler, 88.

Two spots were up for grabs for the 81st Texas State Junior Championship, scheduled for July 28-30 at Barton Creek Resort in Austin.

The tournament is one of the oldest and most historic golf events in Texas and is conducted by the Legends Junior Tour.

The boys' championship dates back to 1927, while the girls' championship started in 1965. Some of the past champions have been Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Lietzke, Morris Williams, Keith Fergus, Jeff Maggert, Scott Verplank and Nancy Hager.

Other area players entered thus far include: D.J. Godoy of Hideaway; Jeffrey Juillerat of Tyler; Jeremy Lambright of Palestine; Cabe Prieskorn of Texarkana; Jordan Sarran of Longview; Jade Scott of Daingerfield; Stuart Smallwood of Paris; Joel Thelen of Marshall; Trey Volentine of Brownsboro; and Nathan Weant of Hallsville.
