Tyler Teams Compete In State Little League Tournament
Two Tyler teams will shoot for a state title beginning Saturday as the Texas East State Little League Tournament gets under way at Faulkner Park, 410 W. Cumberland Road.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. The tourney continues through Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the double-elimination format.
Tyler East National All-Stars are competing in the Major League Tournament, while Tyler East National All-Stars are taking part in the 9-10 Year Old Tournament.
Chad Parker is the manager of the Major League team, while Shaun Day is the coach.
Team members are Patrick Mahomes, Brennan McDaniel, Trace Reed, Jack Calhoun, Aston Francis, Jake Parker, Pat Day, Laker Whitaker, Jacob Lundmark, Ryan Rendon, Dallas Stefano and Jaylon Dews.
The Tyler Major League All-Stars are undefeated in the playoffs, capturing both the district and sectional titles.
The team allowed only three runs in district play and only four runs in sectionals.
The top starting pitchers are Mahomes, son of former Major Leaguer Pat Mahomes, and Rendon. Parker is the closer. Other pitchers are Dews and Day.
SECTIONAL CHAMPS: The Tyler East National 9-10 Year Old League All-Stars won the Section I championship in Austin earlier this week. They will competing in the Texas East State Tournament beginning Saturday at Faulkner Park. Parker leads the team with 23 RBIs, while Mahomes, Calhoun, Rendon and Whitaker have belted home runs.
The winner of the Texas East State title advances to the Southwestern Regional in Waco. The winner of the Southwestern Regional advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
The Tyler team plays Lamar American at 6 p.m. Saturday on Field No. 5. The winner of that game plays either Bellaire or Nederland at 8 p.m. Sunday. The losers of the first games play at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Jason Bramlett is manager of the 9-10 Year Olds, while Keith Batten and Ronnie Florence are coaches.
Team members are Parker Bramlett, Duke Ellis, Phillip Day, Noah Reed, Mason House, Landry Mayo, Call Florence, Tully Greer, Ty Miller, Tanner Batten, Clayton Engel, Ryan Cox and Campbell Miller.
The Tyler squad plays Lamar National at 8 p.m. Saturday on Field No. 7 in an opening round game. The winner of the contest plays either First Colony American or Bridge City at 8 p.m. Sunday. The losers of the first game play at 6 p.m. Sunday.
