Tyler East’s Senior All-Stars Eliminated
By TERRY CANNON

BRENHAM — Bryan West’s Senior All-Stars are on their way to the Texas East State Little League tournament at Faulkner Park this weekend in grand fashion — literally.

A grand slam from Bryan’s Arthur Garcia in the top of the seventh snapped an 8-8 tie and enabled West to defeat Tyler East’s Senior All-Stars, 12-9, on a muggy Tuesday at Fireman’s Park.

The win gave Bryan West the Section 1 championship and sent Tyler home with a 1-2 mark in the tournament. Tyler East won the District 10 championship earlier this month to qualify for the Sectional tournament in Brenham for the second year in a row.

The bane of Tyler East — the unearned run — came calling again on Tuesday as the locals allowed eight more unearned runs to go along with 14 in the opening game of the tournament against Bryan West.

Tyler East committed five errors in the game, four coming in the top of the third which resulted in the East’s 5-0 lead evaporating into a 5-5 tie.

Brent Corley was strong on the mound for Tyler East, allowing just two harmless singles before the bobbles began in the third.

Tyler built its 5-0 lead after the second with some strong hitting from the middle of the order. Kevan House got the ball rolling in the first by drawing a two-out walk.

Zach Cannon then launched a 2-2 pitch over the left-centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead. Caleb Gibson then scored on a bases-loaded walk.

In Tyler’s second, Payton Smith doubled to the gap in right center and came home on Cannon’s double over the left fielder’s head.

Three more runs in the third came courtesy of the long ball as well. Corley belted an 0-1 offering over the right-center fence, and two batters later, Dalton Stroud clubbed one over the left-field fence.
