July 7: Americans May Rebel On Privacy Issues
Not even during the 1950s have I seen people in my country as afraid of the bogey man as they are today. Spending $711 billion this year on military defense versus the whole rest of the world’s $761 billion has not made us secure.
Incarcerating one in every 99 adults in this country has not made us secure. (China, in contrast, incarcerates one in every 708 adults. From the Pew Center on the States, Feb. 2008: CIA World Factbook. Adult population in United States calculated as 18 years and older, and in China, 15 years and older, as cited in July 2008 issue of Sojourners magazine).
Now, a “Proposed FBI plan would authorize racial profiling. The policy would allow the agency to open terrorism investigations even if evidence of wrongdoing is lacking.”
Where will this senseless and stupid invasion into peoples’ lives and total disregard for due process end? Such harassment of people will never lead to greater security, but may lead to the people of my country getting a gut full and saying enough is enough!
