SPRAGUE
By KENNETH DEAN
Staff Writer

CANTON — A Van Zandt County jail inmate who escaped earlier today has been captured near Interstate 20 south of Will's Point at around 2:30 p.m., officials confirmed.

David Sprague, 29, of Mesquite, is back in custody, a Van Zandt County sheriff’s spokesman said.

Witnesses on Interstate 20 told the Tyler Paper that law officers converged on Interstate 20 west of Canton near Hiram Mills exit and the Peckerwood Feed Store.

Sprague escaped shortly after noon.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett said Sprague was picked up from the Dallas County Jail this morning and was helping detectives clear a string of burglaries.

“The detective had gotten out of the pickup when the prisoner some how jumped from the backseat into the front and he took off,” he said. “I have certainly had better days than this one.”

Law enforcement radio traffic said the vehicle was a white 2001 Ford four-door pickup that was equipped with a police radio and multiple weapons including an assault rifle.

Sprague was in jail being held on charges of burglary, criminal intent and possession of a controlled substance.

More details will be posted to TylerPaper.com as they become available.
