Schneider, Duphorne Tied For Top Spot At Eagle’s Bluff Country Club
BULLARD — Whitehouse’s Paul Schneider entered Saturday’s second round of the Eagle’s Bluff Club Golf Championship with a two-shot lead after shooting 76, while three-time defending champ, Dr. Frank Duphorne was five back in fourth place.

But then the Eagle’s Bluff Country Club course displayed its prowess. With high winds and difficult conditions, Schneider carded an 84 to now be tied with Duphorne (shot 79) at 160 with one round to play. “It was a beating. It is just playing tough. It was windy out there and I just opened the door for everybody basically, playing like I did,” said a disappointed Schneider following his round. “I just couldn’t keep it together on the back.”

Schneider sailed through eight holes with minimum difficulty, but bogeyed No. 9 and tripled the par-5 12th.

“I had one bad swing on nine, but I was still able to make bogey. My next two tee shots shot out to the right,” Schneider continued. “I tried to compensate on 12 and hit it in the water; that was a pivotal hole.”

Schneider, Duphorne and Eric Ladwig — in third, two strokes back — are scheduled to tee off at 3:30 p.m. today in the final round.

Ladwig is two strokes back of the lead at 162 (82-80).

Duphorne has traditionally played his best golf on the final day. Last year, Duphorne shaved two strokes off his score with each day’s round. The reigning champion has continued that trend thus far, finishing two strokes better than his opening-round 81.

Schneider, who finished third last year, understands he will have to at least equal his opening-round 76 to claim victory.

“He (Duphorne) came up to me and shook my hand (after my first round score),” Schneider said. “I think obviously he’s the guy to beat, but I am just going to try and stay out of the match play mentality. I don’t think that’s going to get it because there are a couple people in contention who can come in and win it.

“I think it will take breaking 80.”

Also in contention heading into today’s final round are Jeff Kannard (78-85—163) and Jim O’Toole (83-82—165).

The championship flight will begin play at 2:50 p.m. today.
