Tyler East Rallies To Win Slugfest Against Tyler West
In a game that resembled slow pitch softball, the Tyler East Senior All-Stars clubbed their way past Tyler West, 22-12, Thursday night at Golden Road Park in the District 10 Little League playoffs.
The win gives the East a commanding 2-0 lead in the best three-of-five series, which resumes 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Faulkner Park. The winner of this series advances to the Sectional Tournament at Brenham’s Fireman’s Park July 11-16.
The East had to erase two sizeable deficits during the game and exploded for 16 runs in the bottom of the sixth — 14 with two out — to secure the win.
The teams combined for an eye-popping 11 home runs — nine by the East — and included two grand slams from West batters Justin Haynie (first inning) and Luke Wilabay (sixth inning). Haynie’s slam provided the West with a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the first, while Wilabay’s big fly gave the West a 12-6 lead in the top of the sixth.
However in the bottom of the sixth, Zach Cannon and Dalton Stroud hit back-to-back homers to start the East’s comeback. When the dust had settled, East sent 15 batters to the plate and hit two more homers.
The clincher came on Kevan House’s three-run shot to center which provided enough runs to put the 10-run rule in effect.
For the East, Stroud, Luke Wyatt and Cannon all went deep twice while Caleb Gibson, House and Brent Corley hit solo shots.
