Catherine Cagle Receives Honor
Baylor University graduate, Catherine York Cagle, of Tyler, also was recently named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The selection of students is based on their academic achievement, community service, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
Ms. Cagle, a management and real estate major has been inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, Gamma Beta Phi, Alph Chi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, served as president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, was a four-year Baylor Presidential Scholarship recipient and a member of King’s Club. She was a 2004 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and is the daughter of Brenda and Dean Cagle.
Northeast Texas Community College held commencement ceremonies May 16 at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts for Spring 2008 graduates. Among these graduates was Gina Buysman of Tyler. Buysman was awarded an Associate of Science degree.
She also was named to the Academic Honors List at NTCC for the Spring 2008 semester. To be named to the Academic Honors list, a student must have taken 12 or more hours and earned at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Two Tyler-area residents received their bachelor’s degrees during Oklahoma Baptist University’s 2008 Spring Commencement on May 17, in the university’s Raley Chapel.
Jamar Tra’von Fortune, Whitehouse resident, graduated with an interdisciplinary degree.
Ciara Danielle O’Neal, Flint resident, graduated with a degree in multilingual communication.
Fortune and O’Neal were two of 247 graduates recognized at OBU’s 2008 Spring Commencement.
A total of 2,608 students representing 42 states and numerous countries were awarded degrees from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater at the end of the 2008 spring session, according to the Office of the Registrar.

Yayoi Shimada, of Tyler, graduated from Sam Houston State University in May with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance. Shimada also was named to the Dean’s List.
Samuel Haring, of Tyler, graduated from West Texas A&M University on May 10 among 730 students with a Bachelor of General Studies degree.
Jamie M. Ferrell, of Flint, received a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 5 from Washington and Lee University, among more than 435 students.
Ferrell majored in Spanish, was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, a Bonner Leader, a member of English for Speakers of Other Languages, a Leading Edge freshman preorientation trip coordinator and a 2008 Fullbright alternate.
Ferrell will take a year off for work and travel before beginning graduate school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce N. Ferrell, of Flint.
Briana Michelle Ramirez, of Tyler, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English during commencement ceremonies May 11 at Gonzaga University.
Dean’s Listings
Christopher Jackman, of Tyler, earned the distinction of Faculty Honors at Georgia Tech for the spring semester by earning a 4.0 GPA.
East Texas Baptist University recognized its students for outstanding academic achievement during the 2008 Spring Semester with the release of the Spring Dean’s List. Among them is Allison Bradberry, of Flint.
Amanda Smithers of Flint, has been named to the Dean’s Scholars List at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., for the Spring 2008 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s Scholars List a student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the semester.
Meosia Alexander, of Tyler, earned a place on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the 2008 spring semester at Texas State Technical College Waco.
Alexander, a student in Computer Networking & Systems Administration is among those with a scholastic achievement of 3.5 to 3.9 grade point average for the semester.
Clinton Moore of Whitehouse has earned academic honors at Oklahoma Christian University for the spring 2008 semester.
Moore was named to the president’s honor roll, which recognizes students who earned a 4.0 grade point average for the spring semester. Moore is a senior electrical engineering major.
The following Tyler residents were named to the Dean’s List at Stephen F. Austin State University. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5.

Byron Marshall, of Lindale, was named to the Dean’s List at the Savannah College of Art and Design for spring, where he is an industrial design major. Full-time students who earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher receive recognition.
Academic Honors
Texas A&M University-Commerce student Nate VanBuskirk of Tyler has received an award.
He was honored in awards ceremonies in the spring semester. A computer science major, VanBuskirk won an Outstanding Service Award.
He is a 2004 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and the son of Mark and Robin VanBuskirk.
