June 23: Hensarling Praise
I am writing to say thanks to the unnamed writer of the editorial "Hensarling's Action Plan, One GOP Should Follow."

Rep. Jeb Hensarling has taken some bold leadership steps in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was one of the 100 Republican representatives who walked off the House Floor when House leadership slammed the gavel down to get the vote the Democratic leader wanted. He has recently taken a stand against forcing responsible homebuyers to "bail out" people who have bought homes far more expensive than their budget allowed, or those who have bought second homes or vacation homes they could not afford.

He has also taken a leadership role to stop pork barreling or ear marking. He has not asked for any such "special" benefits for his district. Taxpayers need to know that ear marking or pork barreling is a tool members of Congress use to become popular in their district so they can be easily elected. Many times ear marking buys great personal benefits for the legislators who are able to sneak their pet projects by the taxpayers.

Hensarling's new Contract with America has some real solutions which, I believe, will work. His proposed action play is not empty rhetoric and simplistic slogans that promise change without ideas of substance. I believe these proposals put forth by Hensarling and the Republican Study Committee would make things better for Americans:

  • End pork-barrel spending. (Stop building bridges to nowhere and other unnecessary projects.)

  • Cut taxes, eliminate alternative minimum tax, amend the Constitution to limit growth of the federal government.

  • Simplify the tax code and allow taxpayers to file either the current graduated system or a flat-tax system.

  • Increase domestic drilling, while developing cleaner coal and alternative fuels technologies.

  • Allow wiretaps (without a warrant) on terrorism suspects outside of the USA.

  • Uphold any veto of a bill that is laden with pork and does not advance the agenda to balance the budget.

  • Provide a refundable tax credit to every American to purchase affordable health care coverage.

  • Broaden the array of choices for health insurance plans.

  • Allow energy exploration in Alaska and the Outer Continental Shelf.

  • Other Republican and Democratic leaders who care about the future of the United States should be behind this plan. If the U.S. is to be preserved as we know it for our children and grandchildren, we need some real leaders to step forward and help - as soon as possible.
