COLLEGE STATION — Robert E. Lee entered the A&M Consolidated 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament Saturday with a short-handed roster.

The ACT test left Lee without six starters, forcing coach Randy Womble to call on five sophomores normally on the “B” team.

The underclassmen and veterans provided a perfect mix as Lee advanced out of pool play and beat Cy-Creek 26-16 in the semifinals to earn a place in the championship against Cy-Fair, which beat Klein Collins.

More importantly, the Red Raiders qualified for the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Tournament July 11-12 at Texas A&M.

Only the tournament finalists earned qualification as Lee will now compete at state for a ninth consecutive year.

Cy-Fair and Lee, having already qualified, agreed not to play the championship game.

“With the ACT test, we were behind the 8-ball and just wanted to come down here and compete,” said Lee coach Randy Womble. “These young guys were tremendous.”

All five underclassmen made plays on defense with Tyler Huffstickler and Taylor Reed netting two interceptions apiece. Hayden Tomlinson, Skylar Talley and Bailey Florence also had interceptions for the Red Raiders.

A big reason for Lee’s success was junior quarterback Luke Wagner, who’d missed this past week of Trinity Mother Frances SportsCare league play because of camp.

In his first action for REL, Wagner led the Red Raiders to pool play victories over Waller (39-13) and Austin Anderson (44-26).

In the semifinal win over Cy-Creek, Wagner tossed two touchdown passes to receivers Joey Turner and Derell Tate. The defense did the rest as Lee led 20-0 at halftime before closing out the victory.

Womble praised all four of his starting receivers for a heroic effort.

“Joe Turner, Derell Tate, Marquise Mosley and K.J. Jones, all four of those wideouts were going all day long,” Womble said.

Womble said he expects a full roster of players when REL resumes TMF SportsCare league play on Monday.
