Around East Texas, June 14
First Assembly Of God Saluting Beckham Work
The First Assembly of God will end 90 years of service to the community from its 200 N. Beckham Ave. location on Sunday in Tyler, said church Secretary Teresa Harris.
Mrs. Harris said in addition to Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.and its 10:30 a.m. Fathers Day worship service honoring the fathers of the congregation, the assembly will see a slide show on the life of the church and “where we’ve been and where we’re going.” She said the present structure was erected in the mid-1960s.
Pastor Dennis Newburn will speak at the service.
The church has been at the Beckham Avenue location since 1937. However, last year Green Acres Baptist Church purchased the location and announced in May 2007, the structure would become the site of its Outreach Center, housing the church’s Samaritan Outreach Center, as well as the GABC Restorative Justice Ministry, a new Hispanic congregation and a variety of other missions impact ministries.
Mrs. Harris said First Assembly of God would hold its first services at its new location June 22. The church recently completed work on its new home at 5309 Rhones Quarter Road, just south of Shiloh Road.
