RESPONSE: In last Sunday's paper Scott and Marcy Newsome called all of us who drive hybrids "Greenies" and said that we're trying to save the world. I'm not sure what a "Greenie" is, or what we're supposed to be saving the world from, but the reason I drive a hybrid is because I get between 40 and 50 miles to the gallon.

It holds 12 gallons, so I fill up for under $50, and go 600 miles on a tank. I'm sure the Newsomes pay close to $150 to fill a 35-gallon tank and can go about 560 miles, that is, if they can average 16 miles per gallon.

I have no problem with this, because it's their choice and if they have the money, more power to them. Personally, being retired, I don't have that kind of money to spend. If I did, I'd probably drive a big Hummer diesel that gets 6 to 10 miles to the gallon and then I could pull up beside the Newsomes, roll down my window and call them "Greenies" and ask them if they were trying to save the world by driving that little economical SUV.
