Out and About, June 7-8
Country music superstar Randy Travis and his smooth baritone will entertain Cattle Barons’ Gala attendees tonight as organizers are pulling out a “21 Gun Salute’’ to defeat cancer at the Threlkeld Farm in Flint, organizers said.

Travis will take the stage at approximately 10 p.m.

The Cattle Barons’ Gala is an annual event to raise money for life-saving research, patient services in the East Texas community and for advocacy and preventative education.

In the early years of his career, Travis paid his dues in his home state of North Carolina and then Nashville. After being turned down by several record labels in Nashville, sometimes more than once, Travis responded with persistence and hard work and was signed with Warner Brothers Records in 1985.

Travis established himself as an up-and-coming country artist with his first Top 10 hit, “1982.” Fans loved Travis’ classic country sound and burnished vocals. In 1986, his song “On the Other Hand” went to No. 1. A string of chart-toppers ensued, including the songs “Diggin’ Up Bones,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “Honky Tonk Moon,” and “Is it Still Over?”

Known for his soft-spoken grace, Travis is known as one of the most easy-going, humble entertainers in the business, despite the overwhelming success of his career.

During his career, Travis has sold more than 24 million albums and has had 22 No. 1 hits, with seven back-to-back No. 1 hits. He is recognized as the first country artist to go multi-platinum. He has been honored with six Grammy Awards, six Country Music Association awards, nine Academy of Country Music awards, 10 American Music Awards and seven Dove Awards.

And he even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In addition to his career as a musician, Travis has appeared in numerous film and television roles, working alongside actors such as Jon Voight, Matt Damon, Antonio Banderas and Rob Lowe.

Most recently, Travis has found great success releasing inspirational music albums, collecting his most recent Grammy and Dove awards in 2006 for the album “Glory Train.”

“RINGWORLD” AT HUDNALL PLANETARIUM

“Ringworld,’’ a presentation allowing visitors to experience the international Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn and its moons, is planned for Tyler Junior College’s Hudnall Planetarium at 2 p.m. today and Sunday, TJC officials announced.

The Cassini/Huygens mission has been described by officials as the most ambitious planetary space exploration ever attempted.

The mission is expected to last through 2008, making “Ringworld” a timely show about current events.

Admission costs to “Ringworld” are $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door one-half hour before each showing.

No seating is allowed after the show begins.

For more information about the Hudnall Planetarium call 903-510-2312 or visit the planetarium Web site at http://planetarium.tjc.edu.

Hudnall Planetarium is located on the main campus of TJC near the intersection of Mahon Avenue and Lake Street.
