AlleyFest Under Way In Longview
LONGVIEW – Celebrating its 30th year, AlleyFest, a three-day festival featuring fine art, handmade arts and crafts, music, children’s activities and food, is scheduled to begin today and run through Sunday, officials announced.
Hours are 6:30 p.m. today, 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.. Sunday.
Admission is $5 for adults today and $10 on Saturday after 3 p.m. Children 12 and under are free, and before 3 p.m. on Saturday admission is free for everyone. Gates open at 11 a.m. on Sunday and admission is free.
In 1978, booths along Bank Alley were manned by 39 artists as the first Alley Art celebration took place, and this year just as it was in 1978, pottery, wood carvings, paintings, drawings and fine jewelry will be on display.
Volunteers have been a key ingredient to the success of AlleyFest and this year is no different, said Elaine Reynolds, director.
“We had about 10 volunteers out painting on Memorial Day Weekend,’’ she said. “We anticipate having about 20,000 people visit during the weekend so we want to have our downtown ready to shine.’’
Reynolds said proceeds will go to the Main Street Initiative through the building facade program which will be launched in October.
“It is easy to forget, but it was AlleyFest that helped fund the creation of Heritage Plaza,’’ she added. “It is time to get back to business and begin reinvesting in our downtown.’’
AlleyFest is held on four blocks in downtown Longview on Center and Fredonia Streets between Methvin and Tyler Streets.
