Area Students Qualify For Merit Scholarships
Area students qualified for National Merit Scholarships, among the 2,800 winners. Officials of each sponsor college selected scholarship winners from among finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Another group of scholars will be announced in July.
More than 1.4 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the competition by taking the SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Robert E. Lee senior William F. Coats, of Flint, received a National Merit Scholarship to the University of Tulsa. Coats’ probable career field will be in education as a history professor.
Kevin G. Suggs, a senior at Longview High School hopes to study law at Texas A&M in College Station, where he received his National Merit Scholarship.
