The monthly "First Tuesday in the Garden" lecture series, an educational program sponsored by the Smith County Master Gardeners, will begin at noon Tuesday, in the IDEA Garden at the Tyler Rose Garden complex.
This month's topic is "Texas Superstars." Only the toughest, most reliable and best-looking plants make the grade as Texas Superstars. Every plant earning this designation undergoes several years of extensive field trials by Texas A&M University's Agriculture Program. They must be proven to be super-performing plants under Texas growing conditions.
During the field trials, plants receive minimal soil preparation, minimal water and no pesticides. The benefit to average homeowners from this testing can be landscape success with beautiful, proven, Texas-tough plants. Veteran Master Gardener Sue Adee will discuss these strong and stunning plants for our area.
This program is free, open to the public, and about an hour long. The IDEA Garden is located in the southeast corner of the Rose Garden with ample parking available outside of the southeast gate.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs as seating in the garden is limited. The lecture will be moved inside the Rose Garden Center in case of rain.
The First Tuesday programs will be suspended for the months of July and August. The series will then resume in September.
Master Gardeners, a volunteer organization of Texas AgriLife Extension, are people from all walks of life who enjoy and are dedicated to teaching others about gardening, plant diseases and pests.
