Area College Graduates
  • Baylor University announced commencement exercises for Greer Kinsey, who received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in marketing on May 17 at the Ferrell Center Waco. Greer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Kinsey of Tyler.

  • Almost 600 Fort Lewis College (Durango, Colo.) students culminated their undergraduate academic careers at Fort Lewis College’s 45th Spring Commencement. Patrick Coplan, of Tyler, with a degree in Geology, was among this year’s graduating class.

  • Ian Thomas Ward, son of Agnes and Dr. Frank T. Ward of Whitehouse, was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Management at the 132nd Commencement of  Boston College on May 19. Approximately 3,000 graduates received degrees.
    Ian is a graduate of Bishop T. K. Gorman High School. At Boston College, he attended the Carroll School of Management, recently ranked as the 14th best undergraduate business school in the United States. He concentrated in finance and economics. His extracurricular interests at Boston College included rugby and he was co-captain of the Boston College Rugby Football Club. He will be joining the Lincoln Financial Group in Philadelphia, Penn., in August as part of its three-year Professional Development Program.

  • Phillip Cody Hitt graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M University on May 10 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science and a minor in business. He will attend graduate school at Texas A&M.

  • Holli Gill, recently graduated with a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Texas Woman’s University. She is the daughter of Chuck and Phyllis Craze of Lindale and wife of Chris Gill.

  • Anita Cline, of Tyler, was among the 158 Texas Lutheran University graduates who walked the stage May 10. Cline, a psychology major, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. A graduate of Bishop T.K. Gorman High School, Cline is the daughter of Nelson and Maria Cline.

  • Eddie A. Ballard Jr., of Lindale, received his Bachelor of Arts in Religion from the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary in Jacksonville on May 17. He is married to Nina Ballard and together have four children. He is senior pastor of Pine Bluff First Baptist Church.

  • Russell Charles Patten, of Longview, and Samantha Lynn Kirkley, of Tyler, graduated earlier this month from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Patten graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences, while Ms. Kirkley received a Master of Arts from the Graduate College.

  • Gary Nemecek, of Tyler, was one of 1,700 students who graduated April 26 from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems.

  • Krista N. Smith graduated Cum Laude on May 10 from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Interdiscplinary Studies. Krista is the daughter of Mark and Jana Magee of Tyler, and a 2005 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School.
    Krista attended A&M on a full academic scholarship from the Terry Foundation and graduated in three years. Krista will teach in the fall in the Dallas area.

  • Spring Commencement ceremonies for East Texas Baptist University were held May 3, in Baker Auditorium of Ornelas  Spiritual Life Center with 121 receiving degrees.

    Collegiate Announcements

  • Maggie Pottkotter, a 2007 Robert E. Lee graduate, completed her second freshman semester at Texas A&M in College Station with a 4.0 GPA. She is the daughter of Chris and Beverly Pottkotter of Tyler.

  • Byron Marshall, an industrial design major from Lindale, and Graham Alexander, of Tyler, were named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for the winter quarter. Full-time undergraduates who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above earn a spot on the dean’s list.
