Tyler ISD trustees swore in the newest member of their board as well as a returning trustee, and elected a new board president during a special meeting Monday.

Shirley Jordan, who won the May 10 election for the Single Member District 4 seat on the school board, took the oath of office along with returning Single Member District 2 trustee the Rev. Orenthia Mason.

Trustees serve three-year terms.

Also on Monday, the board reorganized, electing Ron Vickery, District 7 trustee, as president and Michelle Carr as vice president.

Gina Orr was again elected as the board secretary.

Brad Spradlin, who represents District 5, served as president of the board for the last year.

Spradlin nominated Vickery to serve as president.

“I have enjoyed service and I think one of the best things to do is to keep our leadership fresh each year,” he said before nominating Vickery.

Trustees thanked Spradlin for his leadership.

Vickery said after the meeting that he is honored and excited to be elected as president of the board.

He called this a “pivotal point” for TISD and noted there is a lot of work ahead.

“This is going to be a critical year for us. I’m honored that this group of board members would ask me to serve in that capacity,” he said.

This past year has been a year for TISD “to catch its breath,” he said, noting that in the last year the district hired a new superintendent and wrapped up the last of the seven new schools built as part of the Phase 1 bond issue.

“It’s time to get back to work,” he said. “We’ve got the right man on board with Dr. Reid (the superintendent), and I know our academics are headed in the right direction with him. I hope the community will support us with the upcoming bond election. It’s a big year for TISD.”
